Salmonfly Hatch Update Wednesday Recap – May 29, 2013
May 30th, 2013
Wednesday saw a cold front move into the central mountains and bring moisture throughout the day. Here in Silverthorne that came in the form of snow, while up on the Colorado it was overcast with a couple of good rain showers broken up with a brief respite of sun, then overcast again. All of this may have put a damper on actual Salmonfly activity but, the fish responded very well to dries at times from noon on through the afternoon. The few brief moments of sun would bring adults from the bushes and into the air but, those times where short lived and it seemed most of the adults were resigned to wait it out in the willows. Conditions overall remain very positive, with clarity above Sheephorn all the way up into Gore in the 24″ range, while downstream from there to Rancho was still 15 inches or greater. There was another drop in flows for the day down to 616 cfs, great for both wade fishing as well as floating.
Action was good on both nymphs and dries, with action on Fuzzy Wuzzy, B-1 Bomber, Rogue Para Foam Stone, Designated Hitter and Big Stimmies/Sofa Pillows. Nymphs that produced well, fished as a dropper were Kaufman Stone, Pat’s Rubber Legs in Black, Black and Brown, as well as Orange and Brown, Berry’s Super Stone and Beaded Rubber Legs.
This morning it is snowing here in town, again but, up on the Colorado that will be rain on and off. Highs should get into the mid 50s and the wind is supposed to pick up as the afternoon goes on. Stream flows have moved slightly higher to 700 cfs but, that should have little to no effect on the fishing. There are still plenty of bugs around with some still staging at the banks to emerge. This weather may slow that for a day or two but, we do expect a few more days of activity where the hatch is already present and hope to see some progress in areas where it has not made a big push as of yet, like downstream from Radium.
As always, feel free to call us for any other questions you may have about this or other hatches. 970.513.8055
